Facing rising cultivation costs, wild animal damage, and declining profitability from traditional crops like rice, wheat, and sugarcane, farmers across Uttarakhand's Dehradun district are successfully executing a major agricultural transformation.
According to a detailed success story released by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), progressive farming communities in the district have converted over 68 hectares of land into high-value commercial herbal farms.
Supported by technical guidance from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dehradun, and private contract-processing partner M/s Flex Foods Pvt. Ltd., the contract-farming model established in 2006 has grown into a sustainable blueprint for crop diversification and rural youth entrepreneurship.
The economic evaluation compiled by ICAR highlights a substantial jump in net profit when switching from traditional food grains to high-demand botanical herbs.

During the 2020–21 cropping cycle alone, herbal farming across the designated 68 hectares yielded 2,330 metric tonnes of commercial produce, generating a cumulative income of ₹243.62 lakh for participating local growers.
Major cultivated herbal species driving this revenue include Dill (460 MT across 10 ha), Coriander (405 MT across 8 ha), Basil (295 MT across 5 ha), Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, Parsley, Oregano, Savoy, Rocula, Celery, Mint, and Chervil.
Beyond increasing farm incomes, the initiative has created local employment opportunities, reversing rural-to-urban migration in the region.
Over 105 young farmers have adopted commercial herbal agriculture. Local growers have developed expertise in crop management, industrial quality compliance, and post-harvest handling, meeting the exacting standards required by pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and food-processing industries.
