Cannabis has long been a topic of controversy in India. Its sale and use have been banned in the country since 1985. However, some state governments have relaxed these restrictions, especially for medicinal use.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana or ganja, has a centuries-old history in India. In response to ongoing advocacy for the medicinal benefits of cannabis, states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have legalized its cultivation for industrial and scientific purposes. Controlled cultivation has also been allowed in parts of other states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Amid all this, a Bangalore-based startup, Calmosis, last year launched medicinal cannabis products in the Indian market. This Ayurveda-based startup claims to offer doorstep delivery of products like extracts and oil for medicinal purposes. The startup was founded by Karan Naidu and Praveen Singh Rajput.

Co-Founder Karan Naidu, an IT graduate, was inspired to start Calmosis during his mother’s health treatments. He observed that medicinal cannabis significantly helped with her sleep problems, unlike the allopathic pills she had been taking. "My mom struggled with sleep problems and regularly took allopathic pills to help her sleep. What struck me was that these pills seemed to artificially induce sleep by boosting melatonin levels in her body, which in the long run reduces the body’s natural melatonin production levels” Karan said.

“Cannabis, known as ‘Vijaya’ in Ayurveda, has been revered for centuries for its medicinal properties. Calmosis recognizes the potential of cannabis to alleviate stress, relieve pain, and promote restful sleep, making it a valuable addition to their holistic wellness offerings," Karan added.
