International Yoga Day, established by the United Nations in 2014, promotes global awareness of yoga's benefits. PM Narendra Modi leads celebrations with the theme 'Yoga For Self And Society' by the Ministry of Ayush. “Yoga For Self And Society is a theme that the Ministry of Ayush, has dedicated for IDY celebrations for the 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY -2024). It is for the individual, for the overall development of oneself with, and for the society at large.

International Yoga Day, celebrated annually on June 21st, was established by the United Nations in 2014 to recognize the universal benefits of yoga. This day promotes global awareness of yoga's holistic approach to physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Originating in ancient India, yoga encompasses practices that enhance flexibility, strength, and inner peace.International Yoga Day encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to practice yoga, highlighting its role in fostering harmony and balance in life. Events and workshops are held worldwide, uniting individuals in the shared pursuit of health and tranquility through yoga.

This time Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been a pivotal figure in promoting yoga globally since 2015, will lead the celebrations from Srinagar.

Dietary guidelines for yoga

A few dietary guidelines can ensure that the body and mind are flexible and well-prepared for Yoga practice. A vegetarian diet is usually recommended, and for a person over 30 years, two meals a day should suffice, except in cases of illness or high physical activity or labour.

Meditation leads to spiritual growth. Shat Kriyas (six types of cleansing) aims at cleansing the inner body. Yama teaches you how to live in harmony within society Niyama teaches you how to cultivate self-discipline and deal with the individual (yourself).

As given in the common Yoga protocol the Ministry of Ayush, before the practice you must do the following:

  •  Śauca means cleanliness; it is an important pre-requisite for Yoga practice. It includes cleanliness of surroundings, body, and mind.
  • Yoga practice should be performed in a calm and quiet atmosphere with a relaxed body and mind.
  • Yoga practice should be done on an empty stomach or light stomach. Consume small amount of honey in lukewarm water if you feel weak.
