Experts suggest integration of Ayurveda with modern science

Varanasi: The two-day conference, ‘National Conference on Physiological and Clinical Aspects of Tridosha in Health and Disease (NCT 2024),' was inaugurated on Monday at the K N Udupa Auditorium, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The event, organized by the department of Kriya Sharir, faculty of Ayurveda, aimed to explore the significance of Tridosha in contemporary healthcare. 

Professor Abhimanyu Kumar, VC of International University of Vedic Wellness (IUVW), former VC of UAU, Dehradun & DSRR University, Jodhpur, and director of the All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi (AIIA), delivered the keynote address. He passionately advocated for the integration of Ayurveda with modern science and technology, urging researchers and practitioners to perceive Tridosha as a dynamic and evolving system capable of revolutionizing personalized healthcare. Professor Kumar emphasized the potential of combining Ayurvedic principles with advanced scientific technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Bioinformatics, to elucidate the influence of dosha-specific treatments on gene expression and disease mechanisms. He envisioned a future where the synergy of Ayurveda and modern science could unlock groundbreaking possibilities in healthcare, meeting global standards. 

Professor PK Goswami, the dean of the faculty of Ayurveda, presided over the inaugural function and highlighted the the relevance of Ayurvedic principles in the current context of disease management. He underscored Ayurveda's holistic and comprehensive approach to individual and societal health, as well as its potential to cure ailments in all living beings. Prof Goswami also drew attention to the philosophical and and all-encompassing knowledge of the Upanishads that converges with the concept of Tridosha. Director of IMS, BHU, Professor S N Sankhwar, emphasized the crucial role of Ayurveda in integrative medicine. He expressed optimism that the conference would provide valuable insights into the fundamental principles of Tridosha and their practical applications in Ayurvedic diagnosis, therapeutics, and lifestyle interventions, ultimately reinforcing Ayurveda's position in the contemporary healthcare system.

The scientific sessions delved into the current understanding of human physiology, personality, and lifestyle-related insights, focusing on their practical applications in Ayurvedic practice. Professor Meera K. Bhojani from the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Delhi, discussed assessment methods for determining the functional state of doshas in health and and disease. She proposed objective parameters, such as pain scales and autonomic function variability, for evaluating Vata dosha.
