To celebrate the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Goa Raj Bhavan Tuesday launched an initiative to protect and preserve ancient trees across the state.
Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, in presence of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, launched the initiative — Prachin Vriksha Ayurvedic Chikitsa — officials said.
Under this initiative, seven fruit-bearing trees which are over a hundred-year-old and steadily decaying due to infections, have been identified for Ayurvedic treatment to restore their health and extend their lifespan, Raj Bhavan said in a statement. Over 15 herbs will be applied to these old trees in three phases, in a bid to restore them, officials said.
According to Governor Pillai, a majority of the world is still unaware of these traditional techniques for treating and revitalising trees through Ayurvedic treatment. “So, it would be fitting to showcase this special tree therapy at Raj Bhavan, as part of an effort to save and preserve old trees through traditional methods. This endeavour will inspire people, particularly the younger generation, towards protecting and preserving our natural heritage and unique traditions,” Pillai said.
CM Sawant appealed to the people to extend support in preserving the heritage trees. “These ancient trees — such as the banyan, peepal, khejri… some are even over 400 years old — are facing the threat of extinction. Some might not have even heard of these tree species, and that is why their preservation is crucial. Action is required to protect them before they disappear entirely,” Sawant said.
