Bengaluru: Do you get angry easily? Chances are that you have ‘pitta prakruti’. People who are calm and composed tend to have ‘kapha prakruti’ ’, while those with an unpredictable temperament are likely to have ‘vata prakruti’, according to researchers at the integrative medicine department of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans), Bengaluru.

‘Prakruti’ literally means nature or constitution, explained Dr Kishore Kumar Ramakrishna, professor of ayurveda at the department of integrative medicine at Nimhans. It is an indicator of physical physiological and psychological characteristics.

YANTRA (Yoga and Ayurveda in Neuroscience - Translational Research Accelerator Programme), an ongoing Rs 10-crore research project by Nimhans, aims to provide scientific validation to the concept of ‘prakruti’, which is widely used in diagnosis and treatment in ayurveda. YANTRA also aims to throw light on the ‘prakruti’ of the brain and how it determines one’s susceptibility to diseases and health, using scientific tools.

“If a person grasps quickly but forgets quickly, he might be having ‘vata prakruti’, whereas one who takes his time to understand but can store the information in his memory for a long time is of ‘kapha prakruti’,” explained Ramakrishna.
