JAMMU, Jan 23: Treatment with modern medicine and Ayurveda will soon be available to patients under one roof in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu with the establishment of AYUSH Centre of Excellence in this premiere health institution.
Official sources told Excelsior that with a motive to provide better health care services to the people, the GMCH Jammu is all set to provide AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) and Allopathy treatment to the patients at AYUSH Centre of Excellence which is being established in the Medical College at an approximate cost of Rs 10 crore.
Sources said that the AYUSH Center of Excellence will be fully started in GMCH Jammu by or before 15 February and initially, the OPD services for Kaya Chikitsa, Panchkarma and Kshar Sutra have been started there while the construction work of a 10-bedded IPD Block for this centre is underway. They said this will be the first such centre in Jammu division, where integrated health services will be provided to the patients, especially those suffering with chronic diseases like cancer.
Once construction work of the IPD Block is completed, the patients with chronic pain, anxiety, depression, digestive issues and fatigue will be able to get Panchkarma therapies viz Vamana (Therapeutic Vomiting), Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation), Nasya (Nasal Therapy), Basti (Therapeutic Enema) alongside allopathy treatment at GMCH Jammu as earlier such patients had to go for these therapies at Ayurvedic Hospital. Moreover, the facility of Ayurvedic surgical interventions in Ano-rectal disorders viz. Hemorrhoids, fistula in Ano, Fissures, etc will be also available to the patients in this centre.
“This step is aiming to bring best practices of modern medicine and Ayush systems together to provide inclusive, affordable, and evidence-based comprehensive healthcare to an individual and the community,” sources said, adding, the integration of Ayush into mainstream public healthcare delivery is important as it can offer a more holistic approach to patient care, combining the strengths of both conventional medicine and AYUSH system of healthcare.
Sources said this is the historical step initiated by Principal GMCH Jammu Dr Ashutosh Gupta and Director AYUSH Dr Mohan Singh to integrate both the medical sciences for the welfare of the patients, particularly those suffering with cancer as they are usually advised yoga, which will become part of their treatment at the Center of Excellence where Medicine and Surgery Departments under AYUSH will jointly work to treat the patients.
When contacted, Dr Ashutosh Gupta said, “People have started recognizing the importance of AYUSH systems, particularly after COVID-19 outbreak but functional integration in our healthcare delivery system is required to reap its benefit fully and the AYUSH Centre of Excellence is our step in this direction”.
He said amalgamation of Ayurveda with Allopathy will certainly be able to create a healthy society by developing a health care system that is more effective than either system used alone.
