Strategic Leap: Kerala Initiates Steps to Establish Standalone AYUSH University

In a major policy move aimed at strengthening traditional systems of medicine, the Kerala government has announced plans to establish an independent, standalone AYUSH University. The specialized institution will bring all Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Siddha, and Unani colleges in the state under a single academic and research umbrella.
Announcing the decision, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan described the initiative as a historic milestone toward creating an integrated, world-class academic ecosystem for non-allopathic medical systems.
To execute the project, the state government has constituted a four-member high-level committee tasked with evaluating administrative frameworks and drafting the Kerala AYUSH University Bill. The committee has been directed to submit its final draft legislation within two months.
Consolidating Under a Single Umbrella
Currently, AYUSH institutions across Kerala operate under the affiliation of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) alongside modern allopathic colleges. Establishing an exclusive university aims to streamline administration, standardize clinical curricula, and accelerate drug development and research.

State Headquarters: The university will be headquartered at the School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda located in Tripunithura, Ernakulam.

The committee will examine the organizational structure, existing academic infrastructure, research initiatives, and administrative systems of current institutions to ensure a seamless transition for students and faculty.
This initiative is expected to transform Ayurveda education across southern India by fostering interdisciplinary research, postgraduate specialization, clinical trials, and bio-pharmaceutical innovation.
