New Delhi: Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and and sigmoid colon and spreads upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine.

Usually, patients of Ulcerative Colitis complain, bloody diarrhea, sudden urge to defecate, mucus and pus in the stool, pain in the left lower part of the abdomen. Researchers of Modern Medicine consider it an autoimmune disease, where immune cells attack the epithelial cells in the colon.

Genetic factors, environmental factors, long time use non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), severe psychological stress, excessive consumption of milk products and use of oral contraceptive pills also play a role in the causation of this disease. Ulcerative colitis is diagnosed by colonoscopy and biopsies of inner lining of colon. Ayurvedacharya and President of Canadian College of Ayurveda and Yoga, Canada.

Dr Harish Verma, told in a webinar that Raktatisara mentioned in Ayurveda, shows symptoms having resemblance with Ulcerative colitis. Acharya Sushruta mentioned in ancient text, Sushruta Samhita that continuous intake of pitta vitiating food by a Pittatisara patient leads to Raktatisar. Dr Verma developed two groups of Ayurvedic herbs for the patients of Ulcerative Colitis, which are based on the ancient texts of Ayurveda. These two types of groups of herbs are prepared by mixing in a specific ratio. In one group, Aegle marmelos, Andrographis panniculata, Mesua ferrea, Holarrehna antidysentrica, Punica granatum, Symplocos racemose, Salmalia malbarica herbs are used and in other group Boswellia serrata, Cyperus rotundus, Zingiber officinale, Gymnema sylvestra, Berberis lyceum, Curcuma longa, Myristica fragrans are used. The both group of herbs are given at the same time to patients of Ulcerative Colitis. Dr Harish Verma said that these Ayurvedic formulations are very economical as compared to allopathic medicines and do not cause any side effects on the body.
